Vocal Technique

Your voice is a key part of who you are, it is unique, and it deserves to be cared for.  Learning to sing in a healthy, sustainable, way is one of the kindest things a singer can do for their voice.

Your voice is a key part of who you are,
and deserves to be cared for

A typical session on vocal technique would include work on one or more of the following:

  • aligning the body for singing
  • breathing for singing, including how the diaphragm works
  • understanding vocal anatomy
  • starting and sustaining sound without straining the voice
  • increasing the range of the voice without straining
  • forming clear and distinct vowels and consonants

With good technique
you can breathe well for singing

By increasing awareness of their physical state whilst singing,  students learn to work with their body to:

  • maintain continuous and free breath flow (i.e. to keep breathing)
  • identify ‘unhelpful’ tensions in the body that affect the voice
  • replace ‘bad’ habits that restrict vocal freedom with ‘good’ habits that allow vocal freedom and flexibility
  • sing words with greater ease and clarity
  • maximise the range of pitches, colours and effects at their command

 With good technique
you can increase your range

Good vocal technique enables us to sing with greater ease, release and freedom, whichever musical genre we choose to sing.  Once we have good vocal technique, we can sing in any style we choose.

With good technique
you can sing in any style you choose
